Zakat al Mal

A Lifeline for Gaza. A Reward for You.

Why it matters

A lifeline for families in Gaza

Every moment, families in Gaza endure unimaginable hardship — struggling without enough food, safe shelter, or access to essential medical care. For children, widows and displaced families, even basic survival is uncertain.

Your Zakat can change that. It provides immediate relief, restores dignity, and brings hope to those who need it most during these critical times.

Every donation, no matter the size, brings relief to those in urgent need and multiplies your reward in ways only Allah knows.

More than charity — a sacred obligation

Giving your Zakat is more than charity — it is a sacred act of mercy and solidarity. A small act of kindness today can transform suffering into relief and despair into gratitude. Your contribution helps families meet their urgent needs and feel supported and remembered by the global community.

The Prophet ﷺ warned of the consequences of neglecting Zakat:

“Whoever is made wealthy by Allah and does not pay Zakat, his wealth will appear to him on the Day of Resurrection as a bald-headed, venomous snake with two black spots over its eyes. It will encircle him on the Day of Judgment and bite him on his cheeks, saying, ‘I am your wealth, I am your treasure.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1403)

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Zakat al Mal?

Zakat al Mal is an obligatory charity on wealth held above the nisab threshold for one lunar year. It is given to eligible recipients outlined in Islamic teachings.

How much Zakat do I pay?

The Zakat rate is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held above the nisab threshold. For example, if your total assets — after any debts owed — amounted to $10,000, you would pay $250 as Zakat. Our Zakat calculator works this out for you.

What is nisab?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must hold before Zakat becomes due. Below this threshold, Zakat is not required. It is set using the value of gold or silver, so it moves with the market price of each and should always be checked against a current value.

When is my Zakat due?

Zakat is due once a full lunar year has passed on wealth that stays above the nisab threshold. Many donors choose to calculate and give during Ramadan, when good deeds carry extra reward.

What is the difference between Zakat al Mal and Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al Mal is Zakat on wealth — the general annual obligation covering cash, gold, investments and other qualifying assets. Zakat al-Fitr is a separate, smaller obligation given at the end of Ramadan, before Eid prayer, so that every Muslim can celebrate Eid regardless of means.

Is my Zakat tax-deductible in the USA?

WATAN USA is a registered US nonprofit, so Zakat given through us is treated the same as any other donation for tax purposes: it is tax-deductible, in addition to fulfilling your religious obligation.

Who receives my Zakat?

WATAN USA administers all Zakat contributions directly, distributing them to the eligible recipients set out in Islamic teachings, with our 100% donation commitment applying in full.
